Apartment Therapy Drop-out

I love the blog Apartment Therapy. They've created a veritable encyclopedia of creative solutions for people who live in small spaces, (sometimes rented) but crave good design, I urge everyone to visit. Yay Apartment Therapy! 

Despite my admiration, AT’s level of maintenance and style is often out of my reach. I know there are others intimidated by the overwhelmingly gorgeous, organized spaces on AT but still want apartments, that are, if not picture perfect, at least really nice. We need support too. We the strivers, we who are working one shower curtain at a time; we need to know that we’re not alone.

The clever folks at Apartment Therapy wrote a book!

“Apartment Therapy isn’t like, House Beautiful” scoffed a friend, pooh-poohing my lack of house-transforming will-power. But I’m the girl who starts the 30 Day Cure, arrives at the task of cleaning the bedroom from baseboards to moldings in one evening, and loses steam. When I see a post about people saving money by upholstering their own dining room chairs – that’s when I start clicking around shopping for a cat condo. 

I am not ready for my Apartment Therapy photoshoot – my soft focus, shining furniture “House Tour.” But I want to be! So I follow the “therapist’s” edicts as best I can.  But don’t think my Apartment Therapy is moving at the pace I’d like it to.

My husband and I have been working on shaping up our 2 bed/2 bath apartment in West Hollywood, CA for many moons.  It seems like there’s still a lot to work on. This is part of the nature of fixing up or dealing with any kind of home: it’s a living breathing thing.  As our life changes, so must the space. I’ve finally realized; it’s a healthy thing to give up the notion of being “done” but to keep plugging away and enjoying creating the home we still dream of getting onto Apartment Therapy someday.   

Home improvement, like laundry is a circle, not a line.  It just keeps going and going...to Ikea mostly.  Amirite?
